The City of Nashville will implement a new debt service fee along with a new method of determining the water/sewer fees in December 2009. The new unit of measure for determining the fees is called a REU (residential equivalent unit). A residential equivalent unit is that portion of a user's facility that has an impact on the water and wastewater system equivalent to a single family residence. Peak water consumption of 300 gallons per day or a floor space of 3,000 square feet, shall be equivalent to one residential unit. The debt service fee will be for the water/sewer improvements mandated by the Environmental Protection Division. Every account will pay toward the debt service each month. The sewer debt service fee will be $7.00 per each residential equivalent unit each month. The water debt service fee will be $1.95 per each equivalent unit each month. The Water/Sewer Supervisor will determine how many residential equivalent units each business represents. For the base rate and the debt service fees, businesses will be calcuated based on their number of residential equivalent units.
